History

Founded in 1992 and created in 1993 with one team, the Rebels program is now entering it's twelfth season of Girls AAU basketball. We are the largest AAU women's basketball program in the City of New York offering ten teams ranging in age from 9 to 16.  Additionally we host the largest AAU sanctioned tournament for girls in New York City here on Staten Island.

In our short history the young women in our program have played basketball games against young women from 42 different states as well as foreign countries.  Basketball, it seems, is a universal language. We are proud to note that over 1000 young women have put on a REBELS basketball uniform since 1992.  This season another 150 young women will be putting on the Staten Island Rebel's uniform representing Staten Island.   Last season our teams competed in over 300 basketball games, winning AAU tournaments throughout New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Virginia and Florida.

The Rebels are an established and well-known basketball organization. In 1999 the Rebels were recognized by the New York State Assembly and awarded a Citation for outstanding Community Service as well as by local nursing homes for our volunteer services. The Rebels are incorporated in the State of New York and have been designated by the Internal Revenue Service as a not for profit organization. In addition the Rebels are sanctioned by the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) and have been written about in the Staten Island Advance and New York Sports on-line.

The Rebels have sent teams to the AAU National Championships every year since 1994, and have placed in the top 16 numerous times. In 2004, the 10 year old team became the first Island team to advance to the Elite 8 at the AAU National Championships, and finished in 7th place.  The High School Program has showcased our older teams talents at Blue Chip Tournaments and College Showcases throughout the Northeast.

The Rebels Alumni are enjoying prosperous college careers at schools throughout New York and New Jersey.
